Default What litter is safe for hedgies?

I have fleece liner in Legolas' cage and a litter box with care fresh paper litter in it because I thought that would probably be safest. But the litter sticks to him and he makes a huge mess and it's almost impossible to sift it I just have to keep changing it completely. Ive heard some cat litter it safe and my sister just bought some for kittens that is safe for them to eat. Is that the kind that's safe? I know some ppl use shaving but also I keep hearing that it gets stuck in the boys and can cause blockage/infection so I'm kinda scared to do that. So if anyone knows if the special kitten litter really is safe or has another suggestion that would be great because it is becoming a mess.

I'm not sure the kitten litter would be safe, one of the other big concerns is getting litter caught in privates, which is especially a concern with males with their penile sheath. It's even more of a risk with cat litter than shavings, I think. Many people use and like Yesterday's News cat litter, which is a paper pelleted litter and shouldn't be as messy. You could also try using just paper towels and see if that works out well for you guys.
