Default Paper Towel vs. Yesterday's News

Sorry for making so many posts in my first week on the forum... I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right so I don't accidentally do something horrible to Winston!

I've tried searching but have come up with some very confusing answers. I'm trying to decide on what to use in Winston's litter box (I ruled out puppy training pads after my last post), and the two most recommended things that I've found are Yesterday's News and plain ol' paper towel, but I'm a little confused. I might just start out with paper towel, but would like to know a little more about Yesterday's News before I decide.

In one of the stickies, it says that paper bedding can be very drying to their skin/is very dusty and is therefore bad for breathing. Is this only if it is used as bedding, and not if it's only in the litter box, or does it still apply to using Yesterday's News as litter?

Are there any added benefits to using Yesterday's News, like less smell or more consistent use of the litter box?

Finally, there are 4 different kinds of Yesterday's News being sold on the Petsmart website. First is the cat version:

Then there's the small animal version, which has a drop down menu that gives three options; small animal bedding, rabbit litter or ferret litter:

Anyone have a favourite kind, or know if there's any actual difference? Thanks! And sorry again for so many posts...

I'm using Soft-Sorbent with great success for both of my hedgehogs and three rats in litter-boxes. I use the lavender one but I pick out all the flower buds & petals. http://www.petco.com/product/106652/Kay ... SiteSearch

I've had a couple rescues that came in using Yesterdays News and it has worked well for them. Some hedgehogs will eat it and years ago I tried ours with it but took them off it when I started finding bits of blue and red in Teasels poop. As long as the hedgehog doesn't eat it, it works fine although some will scatter it all over making more mess than their poop does. Our elderly Daisy who is a rescue has it and she uses her litterbox exclusively and doesn't scatter it.

For my gang, I usually use paper towels or a small piece of fleece under the wheel.

Delia uses the Yesterdays News for cats. I didn't know there was a small animals kind. It doesn't seem ridiculously amazing, but it's easy to take care of, and my little two-month old is already potty trained. She did use it as a toy for a while, she flung it around and dug in it, so that's an added benefit if your hog doesn't use the potty. It always depends on the hog, though, really.

I personally use the one for ferrets. They do actually make one for cats (2 kinds), rabbits, ferrets, and small animals. I avoided the one for small animals because I only use the litter in her litter box and the "small animals" one says that it's designed for animals that dig and burrow. I don't really want her digging in the litter because it's only to be used as a potty and isn't for play time!
