Default Fleece alone or fleece liners?

With our rats, we just wrapped a piece of fleece around the plastic tray liner on our Critter Nation cage. That seemed to work fine.

But with our guinea pigs, we made fleece liners that had fleece on top, absorbent layer below that, and PUL (waterproof) fabric on the bottom -- all sewn together as one liner. That seemed necessary for all the piggie urine.

With hedgehogs, do they urinate little enough that one layer of fleece is sufficient? Or would they do better with the layered liners? The thread with all the cage set-ups seems to show a mix of both.

I've done both in the past. I feel I've had better results with liners with an absorbent core. Granted this is partially because my hedgehog likes to use her litter box.

Thanks. I guess I'll make liners then.

What do you use for your absorbent layer? I've used Zorb with piggies, which is fantastic but a bit pricey. I've also used the rolled poly-fill.

Zorb absorbs a lot more but I was wondering if it would be overkill with hedgies.

I used cotton batting a got from a fabric store. The initial investment was a little pricey. But I've saved money by being able to reuse liners.
