Default Eating Yesterday's News & Anointing

So I had a litter box in Pillsbury's cage that I had YN in and he started eating it and anointing with it :/ Has anyone else had this happen? I removes it from te cage and put some shavings in there instead (which makes a total mess as he drags it all over the cage). I'd really prefer to use YN but not of he'a going to eat it.

My Gambit would rather eat yesterdays news than mealworms so he gets a paper towel in his litter box, it's held down with a small smooth stone.

My guy never ate it, but would always bite and anoint with it. Luckily, he only did this for the first few days. I found it to be almost as messy as carefresh for a litter substrate and have since switched back to paper towels.
