Default question about fleece liners

i wanted to use fleece for my hedgehog, im getting her in february! but my cage is 43 x 43, im having a hard time finding a good price for a fleece lining, but can i just go to a fabric store, and just pile a few layers in the cage? or does it have to be sown together? thanks

They don't have to be sewn together. You can buy fabric and cut it so that you can fold it 2 or 3 times over and it will be fine. Its not quite as nice as a sewn liner, but it works just fine.

You can also get super cheap fleece blankets from the Dollar Store or Walmart and use them.

You're going to want at least two liners, though, so they can be switched out for getting washed. I made four liners for Ares, which are just one layer of fleece and that works fine. You can get more than enough fleece from Joann's (which almost always has some of the fleece on sale) for several liners for $25, which makes a lot more sense than paying that much for just one. With your cage dimensions, 4 feet of each fleece you choose will be enough for one layer of fleece (with extra to spare after you cut it out), which can work as a liner on its own, or you could put two or three of them together in the cage at a time. The typical sale price for most fleece at Joann's is about $5.49 per yard, and rolls of fleece are between 48 and 60 inches. So 4 feet of fleece at that sale price is around $7.30 - a much better price for each liner. When I cut mine, I add about an inch to the dimensions of the bottom of the cage - that way the edges curve up just a little at the sides, which does a good job at making sure nothing (poop, food crumbs, etc) ends up underneath, and gives room for the liner to be shifted a little by his movements in the cage without it uncovering part of the cage floor.
