Default comfort wheel

Hi everyone!
I was looking to buy a comfort wheel for a hedgehog and run into a bit of a problem...
It is suggested to use 12" ones, but my cage is 12" high.

On the "super pet's" web-site I found this one-

They recommend it for hedgehogs. Is 8 1/2" too small?

The 8 1/2 one is way to small for an adult hedgehog. What kind of cage do you have? Sometimes the top of a cage can be fixed to allow a wheel to fit.

it is a wired cage 36" x 18 x12" with an opening in front raised a little from the bottom. I can not get a link to show exactly what I have, they were discontinued... but something like this one -

You could cut out an opening in the roof just big enough for the wheel to fit. Hopefully some other members can chime in soon with some good ideas.

thank you
I'll get my husband to think about it.
I would try to do something different than cutting the cage, but I do not think there is something...

You could get a flying saucer wheel.

Though there is some debate over whether the tilt causes joint stress.

The 8.5" would be too small, I wouldn't go any lower than the 12 inch though cause it makes the hedgehog bend and run with an arch. Depending on the cage you have you may be able to cut the top so the wheel fits and then piece together a hardware cloth box to cover over like a housing so there couldn't be any escapes. If you do alter the cage a cake cover wheel is also an option. I have one and wouldnt' trade it for anything especially since my girl hedgie destroys it with a huge mess every night. No matter how messy I can have it cleaned in 5 minutes tops and its so quiet.

That's just my recommendation though, not meant to discourage or encourage lol

The way the comfort wheel is designed may not need the stand and could possibly clip directly to the cage too (if it's the one I'm thinking of). Whatever the case, you might want to think about another wheel because this one squeaks compared to some of the other which are truly silent.
