I do not have a ball for my hedgehog to run around in without going under places like counters or bookshelves and I am wondering if I should get her one? I am not sure if it is good for them and do not want to buy one without some advice.

Balls are really not suitable for any animal, and I honestly I have no idea why theyre still sold. Hedgehogs have bad eyesight, and rely heavily on their sense of smell and touch to explore - neither of which they can use in a ball. It doesnt provide them with any enrichment, and is overall an incredibly disorienting experience for them. Not to mention, the ventilation is incredibly poor and the ventilation slits that they do have, pose a safety hazard to little nails and toes.
Just block off your counters and bookshelves with something; hedgehogs need access to a room to explore, and a ball just wont cut it. If you use the search function above your login (on desktop version), you'll see endless topics on this sort of thing - and you'll see instances where hedgehogs have broken nails or legs from using them. Theyre just a really horrible means of exercises. |
