Default Silent Runner Wheel?

Hi everyone!

I currently have an exotic nutrition silent runner wheel for my hedgie. I was going to get a Carolina bucket wheel but the dimensions wouldn't fit in my cage. I heard that these wheels are bad because the front is closed? Is there any way that I can possibly cut out the front so that it still has support or do you guys have any other wheel suggestions? It must be silent because her cage is in my bedroom.

I’ve not physically seen a runner in person, so I can’t comment on the structuring, but if the face doesn’t add to the stability of the wheel itself, it should be fairly easy to modify and cut that face off. The problem with those is that hedgehogs have been known to take ‘leaps of faith’ off moving wheels and problems have arisen from the small openings.

The front panel is what keeps the wheel together, so I cant see how you'd be able to cut it while still keeping its stability.

I'm concerned that your enclosure cant fit a bucket wheel?... What's the issue; the height of the stand, the width? What size enclosure are you using?

I have a long, skinny encloser on the top of my dresser. About 6.5 feet in length and about 14 inches across. Carolina bucket wheels area 15 inches so I would only be able to fit it if it was sideways, which I do not want to do.

With silent runners the concerns associated with them are related to how the track connects; there’s usually a gap on one (or often either) side of the connecting piece, where tiny toes and nails can get trapped (and ripped, or even broken). So even if you were somehow able to make it an open faced wheel without affecting its stability, there is still a safety concern with the track of the wheel itself.

Is there a reason for why you won’t just place the wheel in sideways?...

I guess mainly just because it wouldn't really flow with how my cage is. I'll look into it though

I'd rather give him a safe wheel than worry about the flow of a set up. I think its definitely something that you need to look into!
