Question Why Won't My Hedgehog Run On His Old Wheel?

So originally my hedgehog had a large kaytee comfort wheel and his cage was in my room (https://www.chewy.com/kaytee-comfort...cise/dp/128988). Well the girlfriend moved in and is a light sleeper so she bought him the silent runner wheel (https://www.exoticnutrition.com/Prod...e)__43674.aspx). He took the wheel right up and started running on it the first night. The girlfriend still couldn't sleep however so we moved the cage out to the living room. He ran on that wheel for over a year with no problems.

Well a few months ago I cleaned his cage and ran off on vacation for two weeks. My girlfriend cleaned his cage once when I was gone (a week after I left). When I came back his wheel was completely clean! I freaked out and was ready to take him to the vet, however I put his old wheel back in his cage and he happily started running on it. I have tried to reintroduce the silent runner on many occasions ever since but with no luck. He will happily run on the comfort wheel but once I put in the silent runner wheel in nothing. In terms of temperature, lighting, food, or cage location nothing has changed.

This isn’t a huge issue but it somewhat matters because the wheel can be heard from my room. I am a heavy sleeper so it doesn't bother me but my girlfriend needs to sleep with earplugs in. Any advice on getting my hedgehog to use the silent runner again?

What was the wheel cleaned with? They won't go near it if it smells different than what they are familiar with.

The new wheel isn't a good wheel for hedgehogs. They prefer open faced wheels and not ones with a cover over the front of it. This is probably why she isn't using that wheel and prefers the old one. Now that she's older, bigger, she may have trouble getting in and out of that wheel

I’m just suggesting that maybe the hedgie became slightly frightened of the wheel. He could have gone on his wheel and with the part enclosed, he might have panicked thinking he is stuck or trapped. With some experience, I know that animals hate being trapped or cornered off. Also, the wheel could have been cleaned with strong smelling stuff (my hedgie didn’t go near anything new that smelt different) so maybe you could put the wheel in a place that smells like you the most or even associate it with something he likes like food.
Hope this works. good luck!!!

I unintentionally screwed this up and washed my hedgehog's wheel with a scented dish soap and she hasn't run in it for two days now, where before she was running a ton every night.

Will she eventually get used to the smell and go back to it? I try putting her on the wheel and she doesn't seem to comprehend that it's even the same thing.

Try rinsing it with vinegar and water. The vinegar smell evaporates when it dries and often will neutralize other odours.

I spoke to my breeder and they suggested water would do the trick, and it actually did! Thanks for the vinegar tip; I will keep that in mind for future cleaning tasks.
