Default Zoo Med ReptiTemp 500R

I currently have this thermostat for my setup:

http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiTemp ... 875&sr=8-1

Honestly, I don't love it. The gauge does not allow you to set a degree, but merely has a color guide (green ---> yellow ---> red), and the packaging does not indicate what an approximate temperature range for each color is, making it hard to be exact. With mine, it does not seem to heat consistently no matter what color I set it at. I have put it all the way up (supposedly it can regulate up to 110 degrees F) and still have a hard time getting my thermometer to read over 78 degrees F. There is a light on the thermostat to indicate when it is on or off. The temperature probe cable is very long (6 feet), which makes it easy to position in any area of the cage. It has two outlets on the back, which is good for my two CHE lamps.

However, many other reviews I've read about this product have been positive, so I think that mine may just be defective. I've spent time trying to figure out just what part exactly is malfunctioning and haven't been able to fix it.

My hedgie is not as temperature sensitive as some are, so, despite the issues, I haven't replaced this yet. A different model is definitely on my wishlist, though. If I could do it all over again, I would not purchase this model.

I have two of these thermostats that I use for rescues. At the time I got them, they were the only reasonably priced thermostat I could find.

I have never had an issue with either. They can be tricky to get adjusted to the proper temperature but once they are set, they work great. Yes there are ones that have the degrees on them but I've heard they are not always accurate.

I've used this thermostat for both 30 x 18" cages, as well as 40" x 22" plastic bottomed wire topped cages and it works well for both.

I don't reccomend this thermostat, I cannot figure out how to set it properly. One which you can actually give it a temperature and not just set it to a random shade of color would be fantastic. I greatly regret buying it.

I've been using this thermostat for 21 days. Tonight while Oreo and I were snuggling by the space heater I checked his cage temperature and saw it was 68 degrees! The green light was on on the thermostat, but the CHE plugged into it was ice cold. Plugged the CHE straight into the wall and it heated up quickly. I don't know if I received a defective product, but I'm not chancing my little one's life on this thermostat. Off to look for a more reliable product.

I use the Zilla 11939. It's worked very well for me.

Cryslice, get the zilla. It's easier to use!

Try unplugging the Repti temp and after about 20 minutes, plug it back in. It may need to reset itself. Also, try using a light bulb in the fixture and see if it will come on.

Thanks for the suggestion Nancy. I tried that last night, and tried again today, unfortunately still didn't work. Thankfully they finally turned the heat on today in our apartment complex, so I can set the ambient temperature in our place to 74+ and add the new thermostat when it arrives tomorrow. I purchased a Hydrofarm Thermostat since it's got over 90% highly positive reviews. *crosses fingers*

That's unfortunate. How long have you had the Reptitemp? Perhaps you can return it.

I had it 2 hours past the return cutoff. Thankfully Amazon's Customer Service is great, they're giving me a full refund anyways.
