Default Veterinary Pet Insurance (please pin)

I am posting this message to implore anyone considering a hedgehog, or those of you who already have hedgehogs to PLEASE consider getting pet insurance. Hedgehog insurance is available through a company called VPI. It costs around $80/year which almost anyone can afford and covers everything from simple wellness visits to ultrasounds and major surgeries with only a $50 deductible. I have seen so many posts here over the years from people who have a hedgehog who suddenly becomes ill. They do not have a qualified veterinarian lined up and they do not have the money to afford to take them to the vet, and/or have the appropriate tests and procedures done to help them. This is not fair to you as an owner, or to your beloved pet. I have actually seen euthanasia be suggested because the owner does not have the money to treat a certain condition. For less than $10/month you can avoid all of this grief and heartache and provide the best medical care for your pet. Please consider this so that you do not find yourself in an unfortunate situation in the future.

Thank you! This is exactly the information and endorsement I was looking for.

I agree 100%! I'm a huge advocate of pet insurance. It is critically important to research your local veterinarians and emergency clinics to see if they have experience with hedgehogs (most don't). Remember that driving a reasonable distance and overall cost are less important when you can find someone that has experience for hedgehog medical care!

I actually just bought a policy through VPI but am wondering if anyone here has actually filed a claim with this company as it relates to hedgehogs? Reviews on Yelp are a bit unsettling, but they all seem to concern dogs and cats. I understand that uterine cancer is fairly common with hedgehogs, but I notice in the policy I received today, listed under exclusions, are "congenital or hereditary defects or diseases" and in another area, "surgical removal of reproductive organs", also diagnostic testing, treatment, or complications of conditions excluded. Do you suppose any cancer at all could be lumped under "congenital or hereditary defects or diseases" so that a claim could be denied? Am I just being too suspicious?

I'm also curious about this. In theory it's great and I would love to protect me and the baby I'm bring home in two weeks, but only if it actually works as advertised. It would be so depressing to pay the premium and feel safe and then have a $1000 medically necessary vet bill be rejected unfairly.

If only they had insurance here.... I would immediately get it. It sounds like it's worth it.

There are many people on the Hedgehog Welfare Society yahoo list who have pet insurance on their hedgehogs. I've not heard any complaints. Anyone with questions should join the list and ask for opinions.

Nancy, I'm sorry to appear so dense, but I can't find a way to join a list on the HWS website. Is this another forum similar to this one?

It's a yahoo list. Go to Yahoo groups and search for Hedgehog Welfare Society. I would give you the link but yahoo is once again telling me my password is "wrong". It isn't because I write it down.
