Hello all,
I've been doing research on hedgehogs for a few weeks now and am learning SO much. I've read the downloadable care guide, many, many, many websites and so many of the posts on this forum. I think we're leaning towards a large Sterilite tote during the winter and the C & C cage (3 squares by 2 squares) during the warmer months. Will switching cages be too stressful? If so, I think we'll stick with the C&C one and maybe make the coroplast sides higher during the winter and down to 8 inches during the summer. I think we're leaning towards Blue Buffalo cat food and some bugs thrown in here and there. We found an exotic vet about 15/20 minutes away who will treat hedgies. I love the idea of a litter box under the wheel (I know the wheel has to be solid and we'll probably buy the Carolina Storm Bucket Wheel) and I would also try to have a little litter box in a corner of the cage but am not sure if it would be wasted effort. I'm starting to buy fleece and other fabrics as the Joanne's Fabrics coupons come in. If we do the Sterilite, I think I'll put a fitted piece of Coroplast and cover it like a pillowcase with fleece or flannel and then put down more fabric over that. I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for all the information you are all willing to share. I'm sure I'll be asking a LOT of questions! The proposed name for our little guy is Watson. At least that's what the kids are voting for so far. Kids are 16, 14, 12 and 9 and are learning as much about hedgehogs as I am. Thanks so much! Kelly |

Ahahaha, so I shouldn't link you the guide as my welcome present? You ruined my fun!
You can make cage-swaps less stressful by moving all your tiny friend's stinky laundry with him (don't do a cage clean, just pick everything up and plop it) so it smells "right" the first night in his "new" cage. After I made the mistake of doing full cage-cleans where I scrubbed and washed everything, then watched my tiny friend run around in a semi-panic, I realized that I should be a bit less exuberant. Since then, I always try to leave one thing (usually a snuggle-sack or a blankie) unwashed so he has some familiar smell, then swap it out a few days later after he's gone tromping around and made everything new smell properly again. |

I haven't even gotten that far! It seems like there are only a few litters per year so I should really choose one and get my name on the list! I'm looking for a breeder in the Las Vegas area. Are there any "bewares" that anyone knows to stay away from?
Thanks! |
