Default Hedgehog poop question

Hi guys, I’m new to hedgehog central and a first time hedgie owner. I’ve had my sweet boy for about a month now (he’s 2 months old) - he’s generally extremely sweet and sociable and I’ve just started him on live mealworms (don’t know if they can effect poop?) right now I’m a bit worried about his stool color and consistency. It was recently greenish but was completely normal earlier today -and he’s acting like his usual self aside from that he’s quilling right now. (A bit grumpy -hissing and curling up). Anyway it looks rather dark and tarry to me? I know this is a real problem for hedgies and I would need to see a vet ASAP if that’s what this is?
Just wanted to ask ur guys opinion about it. Thanks a ton in advance

A bit mucousy maybe? I’m really not sure:/ - don’t mind the part that looks like possible diarrhea, it just looks like that because I wiped it up when it was still new. Thanks again

Hey there! The greenish color generally comes from stress due to a changing environment of change of food. The sudden introduction to mealworms could have just upset his stomach a bit (though if he likes them he’ll get used to them and you shouldn’t have further problems), as well as the entire first month transitioning from his previous home to yours could have just taken him a while to adjust. Tar looking/sticky poop is usually a result of improper digestion. Again with the mealworms, since they were new and foreign to him, it could just take a couple feedings for him to get used to them! Just monitor his poop for the next couple of days and make sure he’s drinking water.
Hope this helps 🙂

I agree with Aj but I'd say if in 2 weeks its not sorted itself then just take the mealworms out of the diet. Just because he likes them doesnt mean his body will agree, I had this with grasshoppers, Holly liked them but she got green poo from them. So I just cut them out and after a 2 nights no green poo.

You can use benebac for small animals, sprinkle it on the food and follow the instructions for giving it, and that will help settle his stomach.

Take a sample of his stool and squish it in a white paper towel. If its just brown or green you are likely ok, if it has red, you need veterinary attention. Whenever someone posts tarry, we usually associate that word with a potential for blood to be present. Rule out blood, then you are most likely just talking about a hedgehog who has a stressed digestive system that needs some time to settle down.
