Default I've been a hedgie mom for 2 days

Just thought I would introduce myself and my hedgie. I'm Candace, Lilac is my first hedgie and a female chocolate pinto.

She came to me Sunday after finding an add on Craigslist from an exasperated father that the hedgie that he bought his daughter wasn't being cared for.

Out of curiosity I went and checked out the situation and with no experience in hedgies I knew she wasn't being cared for properly and wanted her out of that situation. So off we went to purchase a much larger cage (she was in a sterilite box a little bigger than a shoe box) and the basics I could find quickly on hedgehog central main site and google. Luckily she was only in this home for about a week and a half. But by the sounds of the father her entire situation may not have been ideal from the beginning. They purchased her at a flea market (in the same sterilite box I picked her up in) and was told she was about 9 months old.

So I'm learning about my adorable prickly critter as quickly as possible to give her the best life that she can have from here out. So far she is eating and drinking well, I purchased Blue Wilderness Cat Food to start out with. In what little direct interaction we have had (I don't want to stress her too much too soon) I've been treating her with a few meal worms as positive reinforcement and letter her scurry about on my couch while I watch TV or read.

I couldn't leave her in that situation and I needed something to interact with and care for in my apartment. I lost a very dear dog on August 9th to Lymphoma and the place doesn't feel right with only myself living in it.

I've had quite a bit of experience with pets of all shapes and sizes throughout the years and have found forums like this one extremely helpful especially with more exotic pets.

I'll post photos soon.

Glad you have her now . But just want to mention that BB Wilderness is to high in protein, 40%. It should be 34% and under (I think?). High protein can cause liver or kidney problems, I forget which one .

Can't wait for pictures!

Thank you for rescuing that sweet babe! Welcome to HHC! I'm so glad that you rescued that poor baby. A shoebox is no place for a hedgie. Everyone is so helpful on this forum and searching old threads yields a wealth of information too!

So sorry about your dog. That must have been so difficult.

Yes, we need lots and lots of pictures. We're all hedgie addicts on here.
