She'll probably be a very protective mamma which is good, I have one girl that got very testy when she was pregnant , and when she had her babies , she would come running out of her nesting box and come running at me. After the babies were weaned and in new homes, she became her usual loving self again.

Ours was a monster when she was prego! Same thing you described, hissing and clicking whenever she would be out of the cage or upon approach of her house. Even if you made too much noise when changing food and water. Now that she's had the babies and they are a little older she is much much better and back to her old self; which is still a little on the shy side but nothing like the monster hedgie she was when prego. Afte she had the little ones she was still very protective of her nest but as we slowly introduced ourselves back to her ( a few weeks without being handled makes for a grump anyway) she got better. I'm not an expert but that's my experience anyway. There will probably be more people /breeders along with suggestions. Good luck!

Yes, some females can get very testy and grumpy. I will usually cover half of the cage with a blanket so mom can't see me when I walk in the room.

That's what we ended up doing too; it worked wonders. Unfortunately we are not fortunate to have a room dedicated completely to hedgies yet. Yet being the key word. She didnt seem to mind our voices as much as seeing us and our shadows moving toward her and her babies. I have to say she was a great mom, couldnt have asked for better! So maybe grumpy means protective.... thats what I attributed it too.

Sorry.. Do you think that she got stressed from being in the same room with other hedgies? But maybe shes not meant to be a momma, if you decide to try again I hope things work out better for everyone . You might be able to answer this; when someone says the mom reabsorbed the babies is that the same as saying she attacked/killed them? I've heard and read the phrase in many articles and posts but wasnt entirely sure the definition.
