Default Considering on breeding? Any helpful advice?

I'm very very interested in breeding and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice. I have looking into and know the risks of losing the mother and that you need to have a vet and that the mother can reject the babies and so on. What I'm confused about is I continue to read that you need a USDA license and when I called a lady from the USDA who works on the licenses she told me that I do not need a license right now(because I only plane to start of with 2 breeding females) and I don't nee one until I have 5 or more breeding females. I plan on taking the babies to a vet ( exotic one) to make sure that they're healthy to go to new homes. Also about a month ago I had gotten my hedgehog and found out that a couple days ago she had 2 babies that I know of ( I have been batting around about breeding her before I found this surprise out). I know that you're not supposed to mess with the litter but I didn't know about it and that's why I was freaking out for a little bit until I saw that there was a little one moving around in the house with Mama. The only reason I know this is because I could see the shapes of the babies through the igloo house that she had them in. I wanted to get an idea from everyone if she would be ok to breed again and I plan to take her to a vet before I even think about it. I'm just worried because people said that she will not mature because she had babies too young. I only plan to have a litter or two a year and not planing on "making bank" on them I just want to breed them and provide healthy hedgehogs. I just want advice and opinions about what I should do and not do and what I have to do to go about this ethically. If anyone has advice for my current litter that would be much appreciated also

I'm glad you want to breed healthy hedgehogs, that's always a good thing. My first question - do you have pedigrees for all of your hedgehogs that you intend to breed? If you don't...then you shouldn't breed. I know it can vary by country, but at least in the US, Canada, and the UK, it's considered irresponsible to breed any hedgehog that you do not have a 4-5 generation pedigree for. If you can't check their genetic background, you don't know whether they may be carriers of Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, and it's not something that can be tested for.

If you don't have pedigrees for these girls & can't get them (and since one girl has already turned out to be pregnant, I'm rather suspicious of the person you got them from, since that shouldn't be a problem from a responsible breeder), then I wouldn't suggest breeding them & would say that you should look into getting breeding quality hedgies from a responsible, ethical breeder.

For the babies you have now, if you haven't already, just keep reading through lots of threads in the Breeding & Babies forum. There's a lot of information & things to think about already there. If you can't check a pedigree for mom &/or don't know who the father is, make sure anyone who takes a baby knows that you can't guarantee against WHS or other genetic diseases. I can't recall what the recommended waiting time is after a hedgie has had a litter, but it should be mentioned in the threads. Nancy & Nikki are the two best ones on here for breeding advice, so look for advice from them in the threads. Good luck with these babies, I hope they do okay!
