Default 2-4months (Female and Male) one cage

Hi,

I'm new to hedgehogs and recently I acquired 2pcs, 1 female about (3-4months) and 1male (2months) both are on the same cage. The female is pretty big and about twice as big from the male. Is this bad ? I even let them play on a big backyard at night.

The seller told me that his 2months old MALE Hedggies will try to mate on its 4-5month, so he said its okay for now to house them together. Is this true ? Or are they going to mate even the male is only 2months ?

Thanks for the help.

I'll copy & paste what I put in my PM response to you so others can see it.

Yeah, that's pretty bad! It's very possible they could have mated. Males are able to mate by 6 weeks and he's probably around 8 weeks if he's 2 months old. Separate them immediately and put the female on pregnancy watch. You can't let them be around each other at all again, even out to play. They have to stay separated at all times, and make sure their cages are escape-proof.

You can post a thread in the Breeding & Babies forum that you can keep updated with any information about her and ask questions of the breeders on the forum. There's a lot of information to start out in this sticky: https://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forum...by-advice.html There's a lot of information in other threads on that forum as well, so do as much reading as you can.

^ thanks for the info...they're been on a single cage for about 5days.

but now i separated them.

is it safe for the female to give birth or to get pregnant at this early. the precious owner told me that her age is about 3-4months old.

anyway if she gets pregnant i hope she makes it.

thanks for the help.

She's a bit too young, but it's not as bad as it could be. There's been situations with females getting pregnant when they're only 8-10 weeks & they do okay. But it is still not ideal! Make sure you have a vet that you can take her to if there's an emergency. Make sure she's on a good quality food, the best you can find. If you want, I know there's a Facebook group for Philippine owners & breeders, I can get the link for that so you can join. They can advise you better on what vet would be good to go to and what the best food you can get is.
