mom & babies have mites...need help!
Hello, I bought a female hedgehog a month ago that was kept in a 10 gallon tank
And nothing to sleep under anyway, she was pregnant and had 3 babies 2 weeks ago.
I just noticed that mom and babies have mites.

I am going to purchase some revolution. Do I buy the kitten revolution and is it safe to use while she is nursing and is it safe to use on 2 week old babies? Also what is the dosage for both mom and babies?

Something needs to be done asap because mites reproduce very fast so if someone could answer my questions that would be great!
Thanks so much!

I personally wouldn't use Revolution on a pregnant or nursing female, though as far as I know, it's advertised as being safe for pregnant and lactating pets. (But, it's also designed for dogs and cats.) As for the babies: absolutely no. The dose for Revolution is 1-2 drops per 400g of body weight, and 2 week old babies are typically going to be 50g or under. (Just weighed a litter at 10 days old and they ranged from 14g to 38g.) Even if you could somehow give correct dosing for something that size, their bodies are so frail and sensitive, it would still be a huge risk. Even in babies that are weaned, I don't give a mite treatment if they're under 175-200g or so.

So, what should I do to get rid of them? Is it safe to let the mites go. Until mom is done nursing and babies are old enough? At what age is safe for the babies to get treated?

I can't think of any other options. You can't dump out the substrate or thoroughly clean the cage without disturbing the nest. You theoretically could treat the mom, that's your call - I wouldn't risk it, personally. Waiting until the babies are weaned would be fine for the mom, since an adult hedgehog isn't going to be in dire danger even from a bad case of mites. However, I have no idea whether leaving the babies until then would put them at risk. Mites feed on the skin or hair/quill follicles, so they're not really sucking blood like some other parasites. I know fleas or ticks can be devastating to baby animals (puppies, kittens) if they aren't dealt with because they suck the blood and can cause anemia, etc. I haven't dealt with this in particular, so as far as how mites would affect babies that young, I have no idea. Hopefully someone else can comment on that part.

Babies shouldn't be treated for mites until after they're weaned, which occurs at 5-6 weeks old, and they should also be 150g at an absolute minimum. Myself, I don't feel comfortable treating them until they're closer to 200g. At 200g, the dose is about half a drop.
