I'm not a breeder, nor do I plan to be one, but if the hedgies have the same parents, they're still full-blood siblings, whether they're from the same litter or not. As far as I know/read, line breeding, sibling breeding, inbreeding, etc. aren't encouraged or common practices with hedgehogs.

Thanks! I am getting contradictions because some places you read it says that line breeding can improve the hedgies if the two are healthy? I know if you continue to far other can hurt them, but how much is to far?

I know line breeding has come up as a question on here a couple of times and that there's probably breeders out there that do it, but the breeders I know on here have all said that most reputable breeders don't agree with the practice and don't do it. I think (and please, breeders, correct me if I'm wrong?) that one reason it can be so bad with hedgehogs is because of WHS, which is genetic. Even if none of the hedgehog's ancestors have died from it, there's still the possibility that the genes are carried in the line and just haven't shown up from the wrong breeding, and if you breed two siblings or a female to her father or grandfather, then there's a greater chance of WHS showing up in that offspring. But again, I'm not a breeder, so I could be completely off. I'm sure one of the breeders we have on here will come along soon with input.

That would be inbreeding. They have the same genetic make up. They (or their babies) could potentially develop WHS.

NO. I do NOT advise this. Line breeding means breeding two hedgehogs separated by between 3 and 8 generations, from what I was told. Breeding first degree relatives is just plain inbreeding. It is simply too shallow of a gene pool. Just because they were born at different times doesn't make them any less related-- me and my brother were born at different times, but that doesn't make it safe for us to have children together. It's not just WHS you would have problems with... You'd have developmental retardation, missing or excess limbs, malformed hearts/lungs/stomachs/mouths... there are a lot of things that could and would go wrong. Too many to be justified in my opinion.

I recently met a hedgehog that was a result of sibling breeding by another breeder here in my area. It was missing a foot and had numerous health problems-- the buyer contacted me and asked my advice after his health deteriorated at 4 months old (the breeder had cut off contact and the owner was getting desperate), and I advised a vet visit. They got three opinions and were told the same thing from every vet... there were just too many health issues to fix, or even address. He was euthanized on Saturday.

I'm sorry if I am coming across harshly or anything, I really am not meaning too-- I simply care very passionately about hedgies and would hate to see any babies experience the same fate-- it is heartbreaking for the owners as well as the poor hedgie.

Please take a look at the suggested code of ethics here - https://hedgehogcentral.com/breederethics.shtml

Line breeding is done in some animals but it isn't recommended with hedgehogs. With WHS being a genetic illness that can skip many generations line breeding just increases the chances of producing hedgehogs with WHS or that are carriers.
