I've had my pet hedgehog Ciri for a year now, and just before her 1st birthday I bought another hedgehog (Burty)
Long story short my boyfriend decided to let them both in the vivarium together which resulted in them mating, just once as I didn't really want to breed her. This was around 3 weeks ago now. Maybe more Ciri's pee absolutely stinks, completely different to what it was before, it smells really acidic and strong, and I'm not sure if this is normal in pregnancy? She's put on a lot of weight and I've given her lots of nesting material and have been feeding her egg and mince just in case she is pregnant Taken her wheel out etc... but I still aren't 100% sure that she is, i don't want her to be ill and me just thinking she's pregnant. Is this normal? Are there any other signs of pregnancy. And would it be safe taking her to a vet to check? I have been very cautious with handling and moving her just in case she is pregnant. Any help is appreciated many thanks ![]() |

They are very hard to see so there is little sense taking her to the vet. If she's gaining weight, that is a possible sign of pregnancy. Honestly if you know they mated the fact is she is probably pregnant, there is nothing you can do but wait until her due date.

Thanks for your responses guys, I am being extremely careful and had researched breeding before hand, but decided I didnt particularly want to breed.
This was an accidental one which could have been avoided but I am willing to look after both mother and potential babies. I have lots of time, and have done lots of research and also Contacted the person I bought my 2nd hedgehog off and they're a skilled breeder so if I need any assistance they've said they'd help. Fingers crossed she's okay, I'll keep updating if there are any more signs or hoglets |

Make sure you have a good vet willing to take emergencies because when they give birth after they turn one is very likely for babies to get stuck and need a c-section and there is a high possibility of the mom not making it.
