Hi, I am 43 years old, this is my second litter and everything has gone well. My first litter about a year ago consisted exclusively of girls, so I did not have to deal with separation issues at all.
However, this one has 3 boys and 2 girls, and now, at 4 1/2 weeks, one of the boys has begun making plaintive cries just like Daddy, at mum. They are not completely weaned yet, so it breaks my heart to separate them..however, his brothers would be joining him soon anyway. Last night also I hard some really hard cries, I think mom was probably chastising him a bit. Could not see what was happening as they were inside a tube. What do you think, should I separate him already or keep him with mum just a little longer? He has been the biggest of the litter from the start. I just feel so sorry for the little guy. I appreciate your responses. |

Are you sure he's not just chaseing her to eat? If he's trying to breed not only will he get mom but the sisters too. I would never suggest seperating a. Young baby is he eating solids? If he is what you can do for a few days is wean him seperate him at nite put him with mom in the am do that for 3 days and count his food at not if he's eating good then leave him seperate. I've only had to separate a male onece at 5 weeks. So I would wean him your self. Im sure other breeders will chime in also. Good luck you can also join breeders helping breeders. Keep us updated on how he does with this.
ps when he's with mom just keep an ear out if its an issue for thoes few he's then you can supliment him also

He is eating some solids (kibbles and small mealworms), but also still nursing. Actually, that is the core of my problem: I am not sure if it is just a sign of hunger, he sounds just like an adult male wanting to mate. Is it normal for a baby boy to sound like that when he is just hungry?
I have not seen him trying to do anything with mom or sisters, but obviously I cannot see them all the time. I have kept him with others for now. On two nights now I have woken up to a terrible screaming sound, but I think the mother has rolled on the hoglets while asleep and they protested. She moved them inside a cardboard tube a couple of nights back. I think I have to take it away. |

Thanks for the help - I left him with others, and he hit 154 g yesterday, at 5 weeks. All babies are now on solids and I think mom is going to start weaning them in earnest soon.
