Unhappy my hedgehog is having babies in TWO weeks and i need tips.

Okay so my little hedgie, Prudence, is having her first litter. She is about 8 months old and i was planning on breeding her later (when im better educated in hedgie breeding), not this soon, but her and my sisters hedgehog were left alone while we were cleaning the cages (only 1 hour !!) and stuff happened. Anyway, im going to be away around the time she has her babies, but what if something goes horribly wrong and im not there ?? My friend will be dropping by once or twice a day, but thats it.
Please ! I need some guidance or tips or something. I'm only 14, a complete amature at this so pleaseee.

First and foremost males and females can't be near each other for even a minute it doesn't take long a lesson I think you have learned now

Ensuring food and water are available and plentiful, remove the wheel, and provide material for nesting a lot of people say toilet paper. Her instincts will kick in, the key is do not stress her and handling will be off limits as will her cage aside from food and water each day.

You not being home for the babies is worrisome but the key is really providing food and water for them, basically you shouldn't even bother her for anything for about four to five weeks I know experienced breeders see them as young as 2 weeks, being the situation I wouldn't chance it.

That being said be prepared for heartbreak potentially, there is always the potential the mother could die in child birth, the babies may get eaten, trampled, killed, or just abandoned to die.

Chirping will be common as they will chirp when hungry and if mom is doing her part she will feed them and they will quiet down for a bit.

That's about the knowledge I know from reading posts, I am certain a breeder will be by to give you sound advice shortly

oh yes, i found that out fairly quickly !
well i got all that down and i researched for days, so i got all the basics memorized, from bedding to hand rearing
But my super biggest concern is that something is going to go wrong because, like you and many others say, the mom might die in child birth and a). i wont be there to rush her to ER b). i dont think i'm emotionally ready to see her die after what happened with my dog c). i wont be there to look after her babies. I'm only gone for a weekend, but still.....
Maybe im just over thinking this

Talk to your vet before you go and let him know what's going on, then talk to your friend and let your friend know what's the norm and what's not. In fact, have your friend join the forum, read up on the breeding and babies threads, and keep in contact with us-- there are some very well-informed breeders here that I'm sure wouldn't mind talking you and your friend through this whole ordeal. You being gone for the first weekend of them being around isn't bad actually-- you have to stay completely away from the babies for the first few days anyways.

My suggestion would be to, in the future, avoid breeding. I know it was accidental, but if you aren't able to devote the time, money, and researching that you need to in order to be a responsible breeder, it's very dicey territory. Simply owning a hedgie is just as rewarding (if not, more so!) as breeding them is.

okay, good idea ! thank you !
i will do my best to educate my friend, and how can i get in contact with a breeder ?
Agreed in that sense, because us being gone will mean no disturbances for her, but that also means not much help if assistance is needed :P

Well i do want to breed hedgehogs very badly but it would be a difficult commitment because im going into my first year of high school, so i think im going to wait awhile. But while i do have a litter at hand, my best efforts will be put in to take care of Prudence and her babies.

I'm very glad you've decided to wait a few years, it's a big BIG commitment, and I'm also very glad that you are making sure you are taking care of Prudence! If you go to the list of members, breeders are noted with a little icon. You can PM them on here with questions, or simply post to get answers from multiple breeders! Positive energy being sent your way
