So my hedgehog is probably 14 months if I had to estimate. She is a very wonderful and loving hedgehog and I've had her for a year now. She gave birth 4 days ago to some very noisy little babies and I was super excited. I was a bit too excited so I peeked in and saw one baby then closed the cage back up. Later after 2 days my mother saw one of the babies had tumbled out of the "house" so she used the plastic spoon method and put it back in. At that time we only though there was one hoglet. The other day when momma hedgie went out to eat I was checking in on the babies and I swear I counted 3 little faces. I could've sworn there were 3. They weren't making any noise today so I wanted to make sure they were okay especially because I hadn't seen momma hedgie eat anything all day so I opened up the house and fed her some worms and only counted 2 hoglets. There may have been a third hidden under her but I'm so overly cautious and worried she might've eaten one of them. I know now to just leave her be and not disturb them until 10 days or so but I just wanted another opinion because I'm a worrier. Any comments, advice, or anything would be very nice thanks!

What's going to happen is what's going to happen. There's nothing you can do to help the situation beyond leaving them alone. Only go near them to give them fresh food and water everyday. If the mom eats the babies, then that's what happens. Not every hedgehog is a good mother. And sometimes there was something wrong with the baby. There's no way for us to know. Just leave them alone. If some or all of them survive, great. If not, there's nothing you can do to prevent it.
Is this her first litter? Why did you breed her? You really risked losing her. It's very dangerous for a hedgehog to have it's first litter after she's a year old. Do you have pedigrees going back at least 5 generations on both her and the father that's clean of WHS? |
