Unhappy Albino hedgie quill color question...

Hi all!

I recently purchased an albino male from a nearby breeder. He is coming up on 3 months old and I've noticed that after he "quilled" that many of his quills now have small, tan/brown-ish dots and/or lines in them (some are found mid quill, others are only at the tip of the quill). Is this normal? Has anyone seen/heard of this happening. Also, two days ago I noticed that he has a gray/blackish looking spot on his right side. His skin is unaffected. There are no mites/ticks/dryness etc. that is visible nor does he have sores or anything like that anywhere, but the actual shaft of the quills on that side are striated with dark color (or those brown dots/lines I mentioned earlier). I did try bathing him, but it's not just dirt (or something like that) that will clean off...it freaked me out at first, but he doesn't seem to be eating/drinking differently and I can hear him running on his wheel in the living room throughout the night...

If anyone has experienced something like this, please let me know. As far as I know, he's a "pure" albino; his eyes and skin are pink and the skin under his quills is pink as well.

Thanks so much!

Sounds like your little man isn't an albino! lol Can you get a picture? It would make things easier to see what color he actually is.

If there's any pigmentation on the quills at all, no matter how faint, it's not albinism. Albinos can sometimes get a sort of yellowish tinge because they're hard to keep perfectly clean, but banding on the quills means that's not the case here. Most likely he's pale apricot (or even darker than that, depending on the exact color of the bands/tips), possibly with snowflaking and/or pintoism thrown in there. The pink/red eyes occur in several of the light-range variety of colors besides albino, and can also be caused if there's pinto that extends over them; this applies to the pink skin as well.

I'm not sure about the grey/black spot, though; maybe that's actually one little spot where the underlying color is showing through? (which would mean he's a darker variety with very extensive pintoing, or something). That kind of thing is beyond me. A photo would help. Since you got him from a breeder, do you happen to know the colors of his parents?

Pictures would be great. It may be that he is not an albino, but it may also be that he'es dirty. Albinos show dirt really easily and can often appear to have banded quills.

Thank you all for the info. I will try attaching a few photos I just took this morning; he was super annoyed at me for waking him up so he's all spikey. I'm assuming he probably is just not an actual abino. I didn't get too much info from the breeder about his mom and dad, but I know he had a cinnacot sister and (maybe) a pinto sister as well. This particular breeder lives about two hours from me so we met in the middle. Anyway - he's still eating/drinking fine and is as fiesty as ever. If anyone notices anything strange in the photos I upload though, please let me know.

Thanks!

...Okay, apparently my photo files are too big. I'll keep playing around with this thing and see if I can get something uploaded. To Be Continued...

@LarryT - Thanks for that site! It worked. Hooray!

So here are a couple photos of the little man. The dark spot makes him look like he's dirty, but it's not on the surface of the quills, when I look at it really closely, I can see the coloration on the inside. I apologize if the pictures aren't too detailed.

Huh, it looks like a pale grey more than a cream.

I got nothing for helping you with the color question but I will say this: "nifty"

Possibly a high white pinto? So the pinto spot is there, but your hedgie has white snowflake quills, and the rest is white with pink skin because he is a high white/reverse pinto
