I think you got pinto and blaze mixed up. A pinto is an unexpected spot of white within the colour pattern.

Some breeders call all facial markings "facial pinto'd" or "pinto faced". I personally wanted to call each different facial marking a different name - much like horses' facial markings are called. So I distinguish between Blazes, Half-Mask, etc. All of these are part of the pinto gene, so both ways of listing the facial markings are correct. It is just up to the individual breeder to decide how they want to list each hedgehog's markings. Since these facial markings were developed way after Hedgehog Central's color/pattern listings were posted back in the early 2000's and the site has not been updated in more than 10 years there isn't a set correct way to list facial markings.

Please Note: To clarify Badger Stripes are a separate gene that is not related to the pinto gene, but can be found on all 3 patterns (Solid, Pinto, and Snowflake/White).

Let me know if you have any further questions. You can email me directly at [email protected]

Except the hedgehog central colour guide is pulled directly from the International Hedgehog Association, which is the body that organizes hedgehogs shows. Here is the pinto description from their website: "Pinto is a colour pattern, rather than a colour and as such may appear on any coloured hedgehog. The Pinto pattern can be distinguished by a total lack of colour on the quills and skin beneath in distinct patches or spots over the hedgehog's back. Ideally, the white patches are to be symmetrical between one side of the hedgehog, divided down the length of the body by the dorsal, and the other. The remainder of the quills - those with coloured banding - remain consistent with the hedgehog's basic colouration."

What you describe as a "partial blaze" (based on what we've seen in this thread), I wouldn't call pinto and I don't think the IHA would either. Many hedgehogs have a bit of a "partial blaze" in their mask, it's just the way the fur happens to grow. There is an established colour standard, whether you accept it or not.

There is currently no correct colour guide - at all. None of the ones out there are correct, including the one of the IHA. Not only because our pet hedgehogs are not "Algerian" (there is no Atelerix algirus used to "create" them and they are not a hybrid between two species) but also because it is severely outdated.
We know very little about the genetics behind hedgehog colours and every name for special markings or "new" colours is just a fancy description without knowing the genes behind it. We are not even sure if there are one, two, or maybe more genes for pinto for example. This is why it is completely useless to use terms like "tobiano", "full pinto", etc.
