Talking welcome home Penelope! ♥

I just brought my new bundle of quills home on saturday! She is a rescue from hedgiemomma.com. I went to an adoption event at a local petstore. I attached the first pics of my new little miss. Hope they worked lol.

She is adorable! Congratulations!

But I did notice the type of wheel you have in your cage. It has the mesh bottom, correct? If so, I would get a new wheel asap. A wheel that does not have a solid bottom is very dangerous for hedgies as they can get their claws and toes stuck in the holes as they run and get ripped off. I have the 12" comfort wheel that I purchased from PetsMart. There is also the Carolina Storm Wheel that most hedgehog owners use that is sold online.

Thank you!
And ty for the info. I had heard abt the plastic wheels being better, but whats confusing is the breeder said they use those wheels at home.
*confused*

the Carolina Storm wheels are the best IMO, there are no slits or holes or anything for tiny toes to get caught up in. They clelan beautifully and come in great colours! Larry T sells them here on the goup. I had mine shipped to Canada and it arrived quickly. He also spent the time to answer any questions I had.
(No I don't get a commision for referals, LOL!)

Congratulations! Yes, mesh wheels are very dangerous. I don't know about that breeder, but they are using the wrong wheels. I am going to order a Carolina Storm Wheel pretty soon, as the Comfort Wheel keeps popping off its stand.

Honestly, I use the same wheel that you have. The last 4 hedgies have had them and I have never run into a problem with them (except they are harder to clean). But there have been no toe or feet problems in the past 5 years I've used them.
I know the other wheels are recommended and if you are concerned I would suggest you switch.

Thank you so much! She is a little cutie.

Some people use the mesh bottoms because they are either unaware of the dangers or they are just unwilling to purchase a new wheel. Honestly, the best wheel to purchase is the Carolina Storm wheel. The Comfort Wheel is probably the best wheel available in pet stores. I would've purchased the Carolina but I purchased a wheel the day before I got Hazel.

I also don't see any kind of a snuggle sack or hidey house. Your hedgie needs a hiding/snuggle place. Most don't like to sleep outside in the open. Most people use a igloo with a snuggle sack or fleece strips inside. Or a old t-shirt or something you have worn so they get used to your scent.

Making hedgie feel safe and comfortable will help her feel more secure and help with bonding.

Cute baby girl!
