Default Most awkward moment ever...

Towards the end of summer, once it started to get cooler out, my boyfriend and I would take Houdini outside to play. We don't have a play pen for him, but he's really tiny, so I wasn't worried about him out-running us. When people would walk by, they would comment on how cute he was, want to know just what he was, etc.

One mother-daughter pair walked by and freaked out. Their son/brother had a hedgehog a number of years ago, and they were so excited to see another one. They even took picture of Houdini. Unfortunately, the entire time they were fawning over him, he decided that was when he was going to satisfy his manly urges.

The hedgehog their son/brother had was a girl. All the saw was Houdini doing funny things with his back. Here's my favorite part: "What's he doing?"

My reply?: "Being a man and asserting himself now that he has an audience."

The woman instantly looked away from him, and gave me the most appalled face. I had to explain that even in hedgehogs, it's just what boys do.

Has anyone else had this kind of embarrassing encounter? I'm not embarrassed because of Houdini's actions, per say, just his awesome timing.

I have two girls so not really an encounter myself. However, I knew a customer who was video taping her hedgie while she was holding him. She had him on his back when all of a sudden he starts "asserting himself". She didn't really know what he was doing at first but stopped filming as soon as she figured it out. It was a pretty funny story. She even showed us the video.

Oh brother, that mom should grow up. Not like you want to stand there and watch, but it is what it is. Just one more way of letting you know that he's comfortable!

It seems like whenever I'm filming my cat doing something, he takes that opportunity to stop and lick his bum.

Hahaha, I agree, that mom needs to grow up. Animals do that, it's normal. Maybe move along and give him some privacy, but yes, things like this happen.

My male parrot does it all the time. He doesn't care if there is an audience or not. I just tell the kids, he's rubbing his scent on his toys, etc.

lol, this happened to me at the vet a few times my last hedgehog was not shy at all! Either the vet didn't notice or he ignored it but yeah it was interesting timing.

Also my male budgie used to be particularly enamoured with my thumb and he was very "affectionate" to it. He's gotten over that a bit now but he used to get very excited.

RIP Quigley, I miss you my little grumpus.
