You're never too old to enjoy a hedgehog for the first time!
Ever since we gave our breeder our deposit in March (not expecting to bring our little guy home until late September -- but we got very lucky in being offered the opportunity to take Fitzgerald home in June), my grandma has asked about our quilly little guy every single day. Yesterday, my 94-year-old grandma finally got to meet my 12-week-old albino hedgehog, Fitzgerald. After I showed her how to hold him and pet him, she spent over two and half hours wheeling around the nursing home, showing him off to her friends (many of whom had been asking her about him almost every single day since March), and she spent well over half an hour of that holding and petting him without the aid of fleece or a snuggle sack. And, of course, I left my camera in the car. Go figure. This morning, we visited again, and Grandma was eager to hold him. Unfortunately, Fitzgerald was super hyper and absolutely determined to be anywhere but in anyone's hands, but we did manage to snap a picture. So, here it is: my 94-year-old grandma and her first hedgehog friend. She kept looking down at him, saying, "Well, I don't think I'd want you as my pet, but you sure are cool." High praise indeed from a woman who has been anti-pet her entire life. ![]()
