Thumbs down Stop licking that!!!!

So during bonding time tonight I let Olive do her most favorite thing in the entire world...Explore! So she went under the small night stand and started licking the wood!!! Like she was obsessed... Every time I tried to catch her she would run away and lick another leg. I mean I got mealies and was trying to bait her out but she wouldn't even give them a look! Yes... I said that! The little girl who jumps with excitement claws and will do just about anything for a meal worm. WOULD NOT even look it's way. I finally got her out buy getting a chop stick and pushing her butt so she had to walk forward. Oh she was also doing a lot of anointing. I am pretty nervous because that's wood...And who knows what has been on it (I got it from a thrift store!) It was super weird....UGH I really hope she will be okay

I think she'll be okay. Hedgies anoint on pretty strange stuff. If you're worried, you can watch her for any behavior changes. Also, you can maybe block the area off if you don't want her getting there again.

If she enjoys exploring, I wouldn't prevent her from doing so. It's good enrichment for her. She probably just enjoyed the smell of the wood, but if you're concerned about chemicals or something else being on it, just block it off with pillows, a box, etc. before you let her out next time. I wouldn't worry too much if she's finding things to lick & annoint over - it's a natural behavior and good stimulation. Hedgehogs annoint over strange things, like dirty socks, shoes, carpeting, etc. As long as there isn't something dangerous about the object like cleaning chemicals, etc., it's fine.

I agree- some of my hedgehogs went nuts over wood and would lick it like it was crack and then anoint all over themselves. I was pretty worried the first time it happened, but he didn't get sick.
They do lick some very odd things.

Okay I will block it off! I didn't think it would be a problem because it was so small...but we all know how fast hedgies are when they want to be! I was so freaked out because she wouldn't flinch or pay any attention to anything else no matter what I did! She was using the molding on the wall as a step to get closer. Melanie it was like it was hedgehog crack!!!! I was also afraid she would get a splinter or something in her tongue since the wood on the underside was not sanded or anything!! I was afraid to stick my hands under there because when I stuck the chopstick between her and the wood so she wouldn't get it she bit it HARD!!! I was like AHHH she has gone crazy!!!
