Talking Bonding progress

After three and a half weeks of my hedgie and I getting to know each other, he actually trusts me and feels safe with me! Last week I was getting discouraged because I'm unaccustomed to having to work so hard to earn a pet's trust, as each of my dogs have loved me from day one, but last night I saw proof that it's definitely working.

I've found that he is much more receptive to being picked up when he's already up and ready for some evening activity around 830ish. About that time last night I approached his cage while he was eating and he ran to hide under his wheel, hissing and prickling. I put my hand next to the wheel and told him that it was just me, he poked his head out to smell my hand then relaxed his quills and went back to his food bowl.

It's a little thing, I know, but I can't tell you how happy it made me that he felt safe when he recognized that it was just me standing over his cage. I leave my t-shirts on and in his cage regularly and I always let him smell my hand before I pick him up so it's awesome to see that he knows my smell and knows that it means safety. Also, I hold him in his snuggle pouch at night while I watch tv and he's gone from hiding in the bottom of it to poking his head out and staring at me, to coming out and crawling around on me. Hopefully soon he'll sleep on me without the pouch.

Sorry for going on and on. Just had to share with folks who understand

how much hedge would a hedgehog hog if a hedgehog could hog hedge?

Congrats! I'm still working on bonding as well. We both seem to be at around the same stage. It's definitely rewarding to know the hard work is paying off.

That's great! I've owned Clara for a few days, and while I'm not to the point where she's relaxed when I wake her up, she does enjoy sleeping in my shirt (it sounds really strange, I know).

Aww congrats! I've had Hazel for about a week now and she is doing a little better. She still hisses and puts up her quills when I wake her up but once she smells my hand she relaxes. I can't wait until she fully trusts me!
