Default New Hedgehog Owner Questions

Hey everyone,

I just recently (about a month ago) got a female hedgehog named Heidi, who is now about 3 months old. After about a month I had a few questions and haven't gotten the greatest answers so far, and I'm sure they've been asked and answered a million times on here before.

I know that she is just a baby but I was wondering how much she should be sleeping each day. I've come to note that she sleeps the majority of the day and doesn't wake up until midnight (or whenever I turn the light off). Obviously I take her out around 6pm every night and play with her but she still just wakes up when the light goes off.

Second, what is the best way to try and litter train them? I've noticed the only training she has so far is to use the bathroom while she's running in the wheel.

Third, what is the best way to trim her nails? I tried it for the first time today and it was a 20 minute long ordeal because she wouldn't hold still and everyone I would try to trim them, she would curl up.

Finally, what is the best way to try and get her used to wanting to be around me? Normally, she will let me hold her for about 10-20 minutes then she'll start getting fidgety so I know it's time to put her in the cage to do her "business" and immediately afterward she heads for her hideaway.

My hedgehog sleeps all day, and I take him out as early as 10 pm and handle him until around 1 AM when I go to bed. He does not wake up unless the lights are dimmed in my room, so I'm pretty sure yours is acting normal

Mine is already litter trained... he pretty much taught himself... so I have no personal suggestions. I have seen on the forum, though, that you can move their poop, and soak a tissue in their pee (if it's recent) and put it in the litterbox where you want her to go. Keep in mind, some hedgies just will not be trained. All hedgehogs poop and pee while running, by the way, so there is no way you can train them not to do that.

I trim my hedgie's nails after a bath/foot bath. Otherwise it is a disaster I trimmed his other foot the other day without giving him a foot bath and he was a ball of huffing quills I finally got around to doing it because he gave up once I got a good hold of his foot. Usually I do this while he's on his back, but there are other ways to do it; basically what is the most comfortable for you.

I always have my cuddle sack handy with my hedgie. That way he can hide if he wants and come out and explore if he wants to. He usually sleeps in the sack and cuddles with me for a good hour before he pokes his little nose out... then he's usually like "hey ma, where's my food?"

So yeah... hopefully that helped

From my experience, hedgies like to sleep most of the day because they prefer darkness over the light. So if you take her out at 6 pm, maybe dim the lights or something! And my hedgie comes out whenever I turn off the lights, that's when he runs on his wheel, eats a bunch more, and frolics around his cage lol

To your second question, see where she goes to the bathroom the most. If it's around her wheel, then put some paper towels under her wheel and it won't be that much of a mess to clean in the morning. Not saying she won't go anywhere else to pee or poop, but the majority of the time she'll go where she usually goes. (at least that's what my hedgie does lol)

Thirdly, I can't answer about trimming nails, because I haven't yet since I just got my hedgie a few weeks ago and his nails aren't long yet.

Lastly, you can simply let her crawl around you while you watch TV or play on the computer. The best way to get them used to you is by just being around them. Every hedgie takes a different amount of time to warm up to their owner. For instance, my hedgie finally falls asleep in my hands as of tonight, and he's never done that or wanted to before Perhaps place a shirt that smells like you in her cage and so when you take her out she'll realize you're protection and comfort.

Hope this helps a bit? lol

Yep, sleeping that much is very normal.

If you do a search (box in the upper left hand corner over the list of threads in a forum), you can find the answers to lots of your other questions.
