Smooshing flat?

I've seen squirrels and other small animals do this (hamsters, gerbils, etc.), but it always seemed due to bring frightened. Whiffle does this while she's playing - smooshes herself flat and shuffles along, shoveling her nose under toys, like some kind of quilled bulldozer.

Is this normal? :?: I haven't come across any mention of this particular behavior in any of the threads I've read here. She also seems to enjoy (?) mashing herself underneath her wheel, choosing to squeeze under it rather than go around it.

It's funny and cute to watch, but I want to be sure it's not some hedgehog way of indicating that they feel itchy (like a bear rubbing it's back on a tree trunk, etc.), and she actually needs oil on her skin or an oatmeal bath or something.

Just laying flat out under stuff is called splatting. The sort of crawling around can be stretching and the squeezing under toys is normal as far as I know. Quigley does it too. I think because hedgehogs are essentially burrowers so being squished under something might make them feel safe.

Aren't they sooo cute when they do that... Hitch tends to splat when he is curly up underneath a blanket or snuggled up by my girlfriends neck as we watch TV. It's the most adorable thing..
