Unhappy Fell and is Now Petrified of Everything

When I first got my hedgie 3 days ago I built a new cage c&c pretty huge playpen for him to be super happy. He was skittish at first but when I moved him to the c&c I sat in it and he ran all about the cage and right up to me. Crawling under my legs etc. He was fearless. That night he was just loving life. I took a shower and was getting dressed (lot of movement right by his cage), I would walk about my room as usual, leave in and out as usual, and he wouldn’t react at all! The first night he ran about his cage like a mad man playing on his wheel and wrestling a pair of socks for hours.

The next day he was on my bed and he dropped onto a box full of clothes for the Salvation Army so it was a super soft landing. I went to grab him from the clothing gently and he hissed and popped out of the box, landing on the wire to my mini fan which fell on him.

He doesn’t seem hurt at all. He still runs about his cage and does all his normal activities, but only when he thinks I’m not there. I have to literally stay out of his sight for hours for him to leave his hideout.

When I walk out of the room, get dressed, literally any movement he hisses and puts his spikes up.

I feel horrible, honestly, I can’t forgive myself for it. I feel like the little guy is scarred. I know their eyesight is terrible so he probably doesn’t think I hurt him, but more so that his new environment isn’t safe which is even worse in my opinion.

Has this happened to anyone else? Will he ever feel safe again? Can I do anything to excel the process?

The odds of him popping out of the box of clothing and onto a wire is absolutely 1/1000000. I worked so hard to hand build his c&c home which he loved and how he doesn’t leave his house it makes me feel even worse. Especially when he enjoyed it so much before the incident.

Please please help. I’m

Give him grace and time, quietly hold him in your lap and don't stop your activities, if you do, this will teach him that he can keep hissing. Just be kind and let him warm up to you again.
