Exclamation New hedge mom. Please help!

I just adopted two hedgehogs three days ago (last night was night three). One boy and one girl. I made sure to ask how the previous owner housed them and she assured that they were together their whole life. The first night everything was fine. The past two nights around 3 AM they both hiss and the boy latches onto the females side with his mouth like he is biting her. I asked the previous owner tons of questions like if they were together their whole life and if they fought. She said they never fought like this and they were defiantly together their whole life. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I will gladly separate them if I must. I just want to understand what they are doing and how to help.

He's trying to breed her. You need to separate them immediately. Female hedgehogs are induced ovulators, this means they come into heat when exposed to a male. That poor girl has been coming into heat, being bred by the male, having babies and the male has been killing her babies and then she has been coming right back into heat. This has been going on over and over. The previous owner probably didn't even know this was happening because hedgehogs are very good at cleaning up after something like that.

The poor mom needs to be in her own cage and the two of them can never been in contact with each other again, not even for a moment. Any time she is near him she will come into heat.

You now need to be on pregnancy watch and need to read over all the threads in the breeding section. I'm sorry the previous owner did this to you and to the female.

Thank you so so so much. I felt so helpless. The previous owner is absolutely helpless anymore and I just want my babies to live a happy healthy life. I can’t thank you enough!!
