Default Sleeping too much?

And no, I don't mean he's hibernating. He's fully active at nights, and I have a poo coated wheel to prove it And he gets about 14 hrs of light daily. *Forgot to add, he'll be 4 months old in 4 days, so it's not just "baby sleep"

What I mean is, when I have him out with me. He does minimal playing and exploring. Though he is very active in chasing mealies. I have some balls and tp rolls for him to play, but he's not all that interested in them.... Why? Because he'll find my pants and sprawl out beside me, and sometimes, he'll climb up into my lap to sleep. I'm starting to wonder if I should've named him Sleepy, instead of Shinjy. Once he finds fabric to sleep on, all else is forgotten and he'll dedicate his time to sleeping. I've had him out with me for 1 hr, 2 hrs, 5 hrs, and he'll sleep through the whole thing. I can take him out, and if I needed to do something quick, I put him down with his fleecie and he'll just stay there and sleep. The moment I put him on a hard surface without his fleecie, he'll immediately wake up and shuffle around trying to find it again.

Though being a student, this actually works out really great for me. Because I can have him on my lap while I'm doing homework, or on the computer, and he's happy to be out for hours. Though it would also be nice if he'd actually move around and play a bit when I take him out, but at the same time, not totally necessary, as he gets his exercise from his wheel. Maybe he's just made to sleep and snuggle?

All else about him is normal. He's eating, drinking, pooping and peeing on his wheel at nights. He's just a sleeper when he's out with me and has little interest in exploring, when he can find somewhere to sleep.

My hedgie is like that too. It is really nice to have them cuddle with you, but I agree that it'd be fun to watch them explore. I have put Lily on the floor of my room, and so far she's tried exploring twice, but neither attempt lasted very long and she soon curled up to go to sleep. I think it could just be their nature, that they enjoy cuddling and sleeping. Also, though, I think if you have bright lights on while you put him down, he may just think it's day and time to sleep. The two times that Lily's been willing to explore a bit, I've only had on two small lights and kept it pretty dim in my room. And make sure that wherever you're putting him down, the temperature of the room is warm. Lily never wanted to explore in our living room and I finally figured out it was because the floor was too cold and she didn't like it. So maybe try adjusting the light and temp and see if it encourages any exploration attempts.

Hehe, the only thing that really works with him is to dangle a mealie infront of his face. He'll chase it everywhere!

I usually have a small lamp or tv light when I bring him out, and he's usually on the couch, carpet, or my bed, never on tile. And it's always in a warm room. Right now, my whole apartment is at least 74(lucky that I prefer the heat).

I'll just make do with him chasing the mealies Though I doubt he's very impressed. If I let him, he'll climb into the mealie container and try to get them through the lid XD

Haha, that's so cute. I have yet to try my little girl on mealies, although I really want to after hearing how most people's hedgies go nuts for them. But I'm switching her food right now, and I don't want to introduce anything else new until she gets settled on the new food. I'm not sure what else you could try, lol. Maybe someone else will be able to suggest something else to try.

Perhaps we are just destined with lazy hedgies that just love to snuggle and sleep

I've been thinking of getting some children's interlocking playmats and setting up a play area, without snuggle blankets and see what he'll do without anything to hide in. Maybe even add in some mealies for him to actually chase and catch himself ^_^
