Default oral fixation?

When Annabell came home from the breeder she had one of these cat toys & would carry it into her hut with her to sleep. It was looking pretty ragged so I picked up some new ones. She chewed on this one for almost 3 hrs non-stop. She doesn't so much chew as *gums* it & paws at it, then struggles to turn herself around with it still in her mouth & continues. It's not vicious in any way, almost looks like a child with a pacifier or a dog (my family dog used to do this with a toy).

Does anyone else's hedgie do this? Any suggestions of why? She lived with her mom until she was 3 months, so I wonder if it isn't some sort of seperation thing?

(oh & the toy is one of those foam soccer balls. I tried tearing it apart with my fingers and was unable to, it's pretty durable.)

Can't say that I've come across anyone else who has had a hedgehog do this, at least here on HHC, but it sounds like she's kind of nursing on it as she would be with her mother. It wouldn't surprise me though, as you said and I had a pug that basically did the same thing with a barney doll, and many cats tend to do the 'needing' thing with their paws....on my chest, and of course the hold sucking thumb babies. Interesting though.

If that ball is foam, take it away from her. She may not be fixed on it, it may be getting stuck on her teeth.

One of my girls had one in her mouth for quite a while one night and when I went to take it from her, I discovered why. It was stuck on her teeth and she couldn't get it off. Being foam, they take a big bite and their teeth sink into the foam. Then they can't open their mouths wide enough to release both upper and lower jaws from the foam.

Foam balls aren't safe. I thought they were okay under supervision but they aren't.

Really? It is a foam ball. She goes after them repedately. If she was stuck, would she not take them anymore? Even if I take it away from her, she goes for it again.

What about the footballs they have in the store (superstore). The soccer ball is about 1" in diameter, the football looked about only 1/2". Do you think this would be safe?

Rose has an oral fixation. And I have had one other hedgehog that did as well. So there are others out there, you are not alone.

I used the foam balls with Rose a long time ago and she would bite them then hold them in her mouth. She wasn't stuck, but liked to hold them and pack them around. I stopped using them because the foam eventually starts to break apart and I didn't want her to swallow the tiny pieces of foam. To replace them, I made cloth balls and cubes. She loves them. She has one that she carries into her bed and snuggles with it.

Here is Cooper's bed and cuddle cube/buddy (minus his blanket). His cube is larger than the one Rose has, he doesn't carry his around, but does snuggle with it. I don't have an image of Rose's handy, but hopefully this gives you an idea of what I'm talking about. I don't know why that cube looks like it takes up the entire bed. Must be the angle of the image. I don't remember exact measurements that I made that cube, but I think its about a 3" (his bed is 12").

What's inside of it? Is it just a bunch of cloth with one layer sewn around the outside?
