Default new hedgie, new wheel

can any one tell me how to train my hedgehog to run on his wheel? i've tried to entice him with meal worms, but all he is interested in is sleeping under it.

hmmmmm......never had to "train" any of mine to use their wheel. Just sort of comes natural to them, I think. I'd just leave your hedgie alone and allow time for it to explore and try it out all by itself. One night you're gonna wake up, wondering where all that noise is coming from.....LOL! Actually, I had one that I never saw using her wheel, and thought that she was not using it the first few days after I got her. But then suddenly one morning I saw POOP in all over the wheel, and that's when I knew she'd finally figured it out. I have one hedgie that simply cares nothing about the wheel at all, and others that run 10K marathons all night long.

Some catch on within minutes of being given a wheel. Others it can take a while. Check how easily the wheel spins. If it doesn't spin freely, the hedgehog might not be large enough to make it move. What is the angle. A slight downward angle is good to allow urine to drain off but too much and the hedgehog slides off too.

well, he used his wheel last night.... but not to its specified purpose. when i woke up this morning he had pulled the wheel off the stand (idk how he did that), pooped all over it and was sleeping under it. ugh. what to do, what to do?

You will want to glue the wheel to its stand so your hedgehog can't pull it off again. I had to do that with Herisson. It may be hard to push the stand into the holes on the wheel unless you know the trick; it will work easily if you squeeze near the base while inserting the pegs into the holes.
You will also want to clean the wheel. Be prepared to do this regularly. My hedgehog Herisson always poops on it.
Don't worry if your hedgehog sleeps under it, Herisson does this sometimes too.

Here's an easy fix so it won't come off the stand. Use a plastic zip tie to hold the wheel on to the stand. With the hook attached you can hook it to the bars of the cage so there is no risk of it tipping over.

Hi,
Our hedgehog also seems unwilling/unable to use her wheel. We got her from the dealer at 17 months old and were wondering if she will ever take to it having been without one for so long?

She will probably figure it out. I've got in older rescues that I'm certain never had a wheel and it sometimes takes a while but I've never yet had one that couldn't or wouldn't use the wheel.
