The hedgie that I am sitting (Blue) doesn't really have any toys. I gave him a toilet paper tube and a jingle ball but I don't think he plays with them. Is it normal for some hedgies to not like/show interest in playing with toys? Or is it more just that, since he is not used to having them, he does not know how to play? I know that with ferrets who are raised to be "teddy bears," they "forget" how to be a ferret and have to be re-socialized to normal ferret play. Could this be the case for hedgehogs too, or is he just not interested?

Alot of hedgies dont' care for any toys at all. Most hedgies do however love their exercise wheels.

Thanks! I think he is not particularly interested in toys then. lol He does have a big wheel though that he enjoys. I will have to get pictures of him, but right now my camera charger is broken.

LarryT has it down, I've had three so far, ranging from 18 weeks old to 2 years old and none of them have played with any kind of toy. Besides the wheel you might try something like a 4 inch tube, either vinyl vent tubing or pvc piping. They love to burrow and such. Besides actual toys there are things like a tissue box with the top cut off, filled with fleece for them to dig and rut around in.

I have a PVC tube, a stuffed hedgehog, 5 rubber duckies, a stuffed monkey, a ball thingy, and a Carolina Storm Wheel for my hedgie. And besides liking to knock the toys around, she only uses the wheel at night.

Watson doesn't really like to play either - I've almost given up with balls of any sort. He does love to run, explore, burrow, and go into tunnels. Right now, he's still small enough to fit inside a coozie (that you hold your drink in) - I cut out the bottom and he loves it. Sometimes he'll roll that around if he's not in it. Other than that, I have a lot of fleece strips cut out that I scattered around his cage and playpen, and he's constantly burrowing, and then picking his head up with all of the strips on top of him (too cute!!!). As long as you're providing some kind of stimulation and handling, not playing with toys shouldn't be a problem
