In August, When I was on vacation, I bought a bag of cat food that was on sale because I thought I was almost finished the old bag. (The reason it was on sale was because the expiration date was sooner than the rest) well, it turns out I still haven't finished the old bag, the new bag expires sometime in October. My question is, is it okay to give her the new bag in October if it's never been opened or should I buy her a new bag? ( I think I know the answer to this bug I just want to be sure)
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure on what the rules for the use of expired cat food are, but it would be safest not to use it and just buy a new bag. It would be better to not run the risk of making your hedgie sick.

Best before dates are like for human food and just a rough guideline. The food won't go rancid on that date.
Personally I would keep some of the bag out in a container to use for a week and freeze the rest to maintain freshness. Just bring some out of the freezer once a week |

It's been kept in the fridge since I brought it home, I only ever take any pet food out of the fridge to fill bowls. I think I'll start using the newer bag next week. And see where I'm at by the best before date (oct 27)

Coming from someone who works in a pet store, the best way to tell if a food has gone bad is to smell it! it will smell awful. Your hedgie will definitely know and won't touch the stuff either. Same goes for any bag of food you open. Sometimes it gets burnt when it is being made and has a strong odor. Natural balance is very unpredictable as an example. Hope this helps!
