Default My hedgie will eat nothing but the premium cat food

Hello Everyone,

First time poster here... so sorry if this subject has been beat to death!

My Hedgie eats Blue Wilderness premium cat food and superworms. However, she will not eat anything else. She rejects any sort of fruit or veggies, cottage cheese, plain yogurt etc. She is about 1 year old now.

Is a diet of only the premium grain-free cat food adequate? She wont even eat commercial Hedgehog food. My daughter also has a Leopard Gecko and, because I am so worried about calcium, I sometimes sprinkle my hedgie's cat food with the calcium supplement powder intended for the lizard!

Some hedgies are picky eaters. Kiwi will only eat her cry kibble and mealworms I've tried many other things but she just won't try them

Welcome to HHC.

Many of them won't eat anything other than cat kibble. All you can do is keep trying every so often. Have you tried scrambled egg?

Most hedgehog foods are crap so cat food is better. A mix of a couple brands of cat food is best.

Don't put calcium on her food. Hedgehogs don't need extra calcium and too much can actually be bad for them and cause renal issues and kidney or bladder stones. The only time calcium should be given is to a nursing mom, or if blood work shows a calcium deficiency. The latter is not very common.

Nancy, are you talking about added calcium potentially causing problems? Should I be concerned about the amount of calcium in my hedgehog's cat food that they eat?

Welcome Tiger J! One of my hedgehogs will only eat her kibble. My other one is a bit more adventurous. Just keep offering and maybe one day she will surprise you!

Mostly added calcium but I have a friend whose hedgehog had problems with the amount of calcium in one of the foods he was on. I can't remember what calcium level her vet told her to limit it to for him.
