Default Premium Cat Food VS Premium Dog Food

Hey guys!

I just had a quick question. After searching around and doing more research I am a bit baffled. With the protein and fat requirements of hedgehogs why is it that they are recommended to eat cat food as opposed to dog food? I feed my cat very high quality foods such as Before Grain and Origin, two of the best on the market in my area. Where these foods have done wonders for my cat they are also VERY high in protein, 50%+. Many of the foods recommended are also very high in protein and it worries me as to how it may effect my little hedgie's liver function and weight. But I was curious... my dog also gets all organic/holistic dog foods, grain free... the works. Her food is usually around 30-40%, I've seen lower in weight maintenance foods, so my question is, when dogs have lower protein and fat requirements than cats, why it is not recommended that we feed dog food?

I hope this is not a silly question :P

Dog food is very hard and the kibble size is very large for a hedgie,I don't know of anything else. Others should chime in soon.

What Larry said is right often times dog kibble is just too hard or too big for hedgehogs to eat.

As for the cat kibble, you can find high quality cat food that is around the 30% protein range, etc. Orijen is great for cats and dogs, but not so good for hedgies. You can find brands like Natural Balance, Wellness, Now! and other cat foods at the same places they sell Orijen. All these are lower in protein Also, the foods for older cats, or overweight cats, tend to have less protein and fat as well.

Sounds good to me!

But just to know, it is okay to feed holistic dog food to hedgies as long as it is similar in size and texture to cat food?

&& is fish good or bad? I see some feed salmon, I've read mixed opinions.

I've heard of people feeding dog food in their mix. I don't know if there is anything specifically missing from dog food that you can only find in cat food, so maybe wait for someone else to answer that.

Fish is fine, but lots of people tend to avoid it because it often causes stinkier poop

I'm guessing because cat food has taurine in it, and dog food doesn't. I'm also assuming that no one knows for sure if hedgehogs need taurine, but better to be on the safe side.
