Default heat lamp? just bought my hedgehog

well today i purchased my first hedgehog. i spent about 400 on a cage, wheel hut, ect. i did some research and i know that one of the most important things is temp. so the shop i was talking to reccomended a 5 1/2" heatlamp with a 60watt daylite blue bulb. so i had it on for most of the day and the temp was right around 80, my question is for night, i know i need to turn it off, so it has been off for a few hours and the temp is steady at 73-72f. i am just nrevous that it will falll to 70 or below. so should i just buy a red light for night or will this mess up his sleep schedule

thankyou
billy

Congrats on becoming a hedgie owner and welcome to HHC!
Please take a look at my explanation of CHE set up: http://i55.tinypic.com/2hqxuld.jpg

5.5 inch lamp isn't very big- so it won't spread the heat.

60 watt is also pretty minimal.

Where is your thermometer positioned? unless you have a small cage with little ventilation, then I doubt it is reading the rest of the cage accurately.- what kind of cage did you buy?

Do you have a thermostat?

A daylite blue bulb isn't a good option for a hedgie, as they really need constant heat with out impacting their dark hours. A CHE is designed to emit heat as needed, day or night and not effect lighting.

If I were you, I'd try to return/exchange what you bought for an adequate hedgie-friendly heat setup.
A difference of 8 degrees is significant and can trigger hibernation. steady 74-76 would be optimal.

thankyou! i am just really worred about that temperature thing, i want the best for my new friend. and thankyou so much for that link. so basically what i should do is buy that che, then the 10" heat lamp and the thermostat and set the thermostat to wherever the hedgehog is most comfortable and itll just turn its self off and on?

Exactly! the Thermostat is automatic and uses a probe to determine the temp of the cage and then turns the power supply to the lamp (and subsequently the CHE) on/off.

Keep an eye on your hedgehog too, 80'F to 72'F is a big big jump in temperature and some are temperature sensitive. Just make sure he/she is eating and being active, though tonight s/he may not be too active since its their first night in a new home. Most people aim for 75'F as a general temperature, 73'F to 78'F is what I call their 'operating' range, 80'F can be too hot for some (though my girl would argue). All depends on the hog, some like it hot, some do not.

Congratz on the hog and welcome to HHC.

Just a quick question where should the probe be placed?

so today i went out and bought a 10" lamp and a ceramic heat emmiter, i just need to order a thermostat, no local pet stores have one. i am using the 60watt blue day ight bulb during the day and the temp is at 80, and i bought a red one for night time and the temp is staying at 80, i am just worried that the red will mess up his sleep schedule. but last night he was actaully very very active i heard him all night in his wheel, and i counted his food tonight so can see if he eats. and they dont wake up very much during the day do they?
