Default Heating Concern

I am a bit concerned with leaving 3 heat emitters on while I'm not at home. Everyone has their own Machiano (sp?) wire cage, so I know that heat emitters will be ok for them. Are there any equivalent alternatives though? I know the thermostats would shut them off when the lamps get warm enough, but again, I just worry about something happening and something catching on fire. Or are they perfectly safe and I'm just living in the past with light bulbs burning things down?

I have two ceramic heat emitters on a thermostat control. I've had them for over a year with no problems of burning/getting too hot. Except for accidentally setting one bulb side down on some fleece once - it melted the fleece and smelled pretty yucky. My friend did similarly with her carpet ;( But both of those things, you notice really quickly and take action. With them just sitting on the wire top, everything has been okay. I do check on the cords each time I move them, looking for signs of wear and tear. And I validate the cage temperature by using a separate thermometer so I can make sure they're not going haywire.

In my opinion, as long as you don't have any fleece (or other material that would burn or melt) near the emitters and you check to make sure all looks well every so often, they should be just fine. And you can feel safe leaving them alone for a few hours.

Awesome. That makes me feel better =)

And don't feel bad about the fleece/carpet thing, I used to make t-shirts with Iron On Decals (without an ironing board ), and it would NEVER fail that I'd put the iron on the floor hot-iron-side-down

I use the emitters for rescues that are in quarantine. I do wire them to the cage so there is no way it can get knocked off. The one cage has a very door on top and I have the emitter wired onto it so I can still open the door and the emitter stays put. The fixtures I use have 4 little holes at the bottom edge so I just put a piece of wire through the holes and attach to the wires.
