Default aquarium and heating pad

Is it safe to put a heating pad underneath a towel then underneath a small corner of an aquarium that a hedgehog is in? Currently he is in an aquarium but tomorrow he will be in a martin wire cage , i was just concerned about keeping the temp warm enough. i did notice him laying on his stomach with his feet stretched out behind him, does that mean he is too hot? Temp was reading 77 f.

what kind of a heating pad is it?

hedgehogs do "splat" when they are to warm but he could also just be sleeping like this because it's comfy. 77F is a good temp. you probably don't really need the heating pad if the temp stays between 74F and 78F

it is a human heating bad, sunbeam i think. it has an auto shutoff option if we turn it on , we can set it for 1 to 4 hours auto shut off or leave it stay on.

we dont have the thermometer inside the cage we have it outside because we worried he may bite/chew the thermometer.

Could be hotter inside the tank than outside, is there any kind of heating lamp / CHE on it? But as Leannem said, splatting is usually done when a hedgehog is hot, and some do it cause its comfortable.

no no heating lamp or ceramic heater on it. when i looked earlier at the temp from the outside it said 81 but the thermoters censor had fallen onto the heating pad itself so just to let it cool down a bit i turned it off for a few minutes then put it back on the lowest setting and underneath a towel but with the towel folded over once to give a bigger buffer between the heat. i checked the temp now from inside the cage and it was giving me a reading of 76 f , but teetering a bit back and forth. whats the best way to heat a hedgehog cage without having to constantly check the temp ? the heating pad doesn't seem to be a steady consistent but i may need to do some more testing with it. i just don't want the hedgehog to get too cold with the fear of him attempting to hibernate.

76'F is a good temp, though in the end it does depend on the hedgehog, I've read of hibernation attempts with temps as high as 78'F but I don't think you have to worry about that here. The best method around here is a heating lamp with a CHE bulb and a Zoo Med ReptiTemp 500R (http://www.reptilesupply.com/product.php?products_id=75). Do not get a Rheostat as they are just a dimmer switch, thus temps will still flux with the room temps. The ReptiTemp 500R has a settable temp gauge and will turn the CHE on and off accordingly to the temp in the cage.

I would assume a pet store like PetCo or whatever would carry them, truthfully I'm unsure, because I live in some backwoods part of New York, we got most other stores but there isn't a big chain pet store around here for at least 100 miles, and our local pet store doesn't even have plastic igloos. I order my CHEs from eBay, they run about $20 usd. As for the lamp fixture itself, I believe its recommended to find one that says it can use a CHE, I'm using a black ZooMed clamp on heat lamp fixture, monitored it to make sure it didn't get too hot and seems to work out.

The bulb, just go to ebay and type in "Ceramic Heat Emitter".
