Default 75 watt light?

Hey guys, I'm hoping to get a hedgie soon and need some help with heating!

My house is about 68 degrees, and the cage I'm planning to get will probably be around 24" x 14" x 15". Is a 75 watt bulb enough, or should it be 100?

Thanks!

Before you buy a hedgie, read this book (free to download) so you know what to expect and everything you'll need for housing, food, etc.

That cage size is too small for a hedgehog. Keep in mind you'll need to fit a large (12") wheel, food and water dish, a couple toys, and a sleeping space in that cage. Plus room for them to walk around. I believe the minimum recommended space for a hedgehog is 4'x2'. Check out these threads for some examples of cage setups: https://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forum...-examples.html

The bulb you're talking about is a CHE bulb and not a regular light bulb, correct? Depending on the cage size you end up with, you may need either a higher wattage, or even two bulbs in order to make sure the heat is evenly distributed. This thread has great info for heating options and examples:

All that stuff is also covered in the book I linked. It's really a great resource and must-read for new hedgie owners.

Hm, the breeder I was looking at told me that the cage I was thinking of getting was large enough. Thanks for the information! And yes, it would be a CHE bulb so it can heat the cage. Thanks so much, I really appreciate your help!

4'x2' is a bit bigger - the minimum recommended space is 4 square feet, which would be 2'x2'. Many people like the 3x2 (cubes, not feet) C&C cages, which are close to 6 square feet, I believe.

2 square feet used to be the old minimum recommended amount, but it's really just not much space after you put all of the furniture in. The new amount of 4 square feet allows for a square foot or two of space after all of the accessories are put in, so hedgie can move around easily without bumping into this or that.
