Default CHE Setup?

Me and my dad have decided to build my future hedgie's cage like this one but on a much larger scale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtDdjWtIG58
Do you think I could use two CHEs resting against opposite sides of the cage? I see that most people have them resting on the top of their cages, is that the only way?

CHEs are placed over the cages because the heat is directed down into the cage very efficiently. Typically wall height is about 16", so overhead placement both radiates the heat down very efficiently and minimizes heat loss (as it rises back up, which can be a factor if you've got seriously cold weather going on). It is also super-easy to just place CHEs over top.

Side placement may work, but I would expect efficiency to drop somewhat; hard to say how much. Somebody that has Critter or Ferret Nation cage would have more experience to this question. The layout on those cages is more vertical, requiring special considerations.

If you're looking to build a pretty good size cage, I've got a video on YouTube that might be worth a watch. I upgraded Sophie from C&C to wire linen-shelving. It's different than what you have in mind, so maybe not appropriate at all, but it is large. I've never seen anything close to it in size.

I was hoping that using two CHEs on opposite sides of the cage would make up for the heat lost? Would it be effective enough?

Two ches on opposite sides of the cage would work find depending on your dimensions, obviously it's always easier to heat from the inside out than the outside in. But I don't see any major problems occurring. However with such low walls and wire mesh sides the conduction of heat through them and the climbing nature of hedgehogs could cause a serious burn...

Yes, heat will radiate sideways. It'll reach between 12-16" depending on the lamp diameter and the bulb wattage; if you have a solid top, it'll trap the heat more efficiently. You may have trouble with hot/cold spots, or graduation from warm sides to cooler center... You'll want to be careful that your pet cannot reach the bulb or the lamp lips.

This situation may be one where a dedicated space heater makes more sense

Thanks, I have to use CHEs for a few reasons, so I ended up deciding to build a c&c cage instead, I like the idea that I could easily expand later on.
