Unhappy che not an option for me...

hey guys,

I'm looking to get some sort of heat setup for my hedgie and I know that the ceramic heat immiter setup is the best option. Unfortunately, that isn't an option for me. I went to the only place in the whole town where I live where they sell light bulbs and they do not have the proper bulb. The only kind of heat bulb they have is one of those reptile bulbs, but those are way too hot and produce red light, so that isn't going to happen.
Also online shopping or shipping isn't an option bc it's really expensive and there's a high chance that the order will get stolen. It has happened before to a very nice bracelet my granny sent me from overseas. 😞
Anyway our house doesn't have central heating so heating the whole house isn't an option either and the little guy is going to be in my room so it's a bad idea to heat the whole room there with like a space heater.
I know that the pet shop has heat mats but a lot of people seem to not like them for reasons like it only heats the floor and not the air, it can burn the hedgehog, it's dangerous and so on. But that seems to look like my only option right now!
please let me know guys if there are other options that I am unaware of or if maybe heat mats arn't as bad as they say?? could I maybe put the heat mat above the cage like a heat lamp so that the heat goes down? I know heat rises but just in case... thank u xox

Ok, what I do, ( me, I’m not telling you to do this since it is risky and can be tedious, just giving an example of what I do) I live in South Africa, right beneath you. It gets relatively warm here, and seeing as Namibia is right above us, and really close to the desert biome areas, I’d assume it is the same-ish temps as here.

I tried a CHE - setup but with a wired cage, it just proved useless, so I got an alternative method that got my hog through the winter.

I fill a plastic bottle with hot (not boiling, just open your tap water till it burns your hand,) water, feel the bottle afterwards to make sure it doesn’t burn my hand through the plastic, if it does, add a bit of cold water. I then wrap it in a blanket and place it where my hog sleeps. This gives him a warm place to go to when it’s cold.

Temperatures here dropped below 14 degrees Celsius and he was running fine on his wheel cause he had his warm spot.

Now, this can have different affects on different hogs. I’ve learned that my hedgehog is a pretty...’hardy’ hog. He isn’t influenced by environmental factors as much, which means temperature doesn’t affect him as much, noise, weather, etc. Try it, if you wish, but I can’t guarantee it to work on your hog. But it is an alternative way to keep the hog warm.

Or you could make a rice or bean-filled "snuggle sack" that is sewed shut and put it in the microwave so that it is warm and fuzzy and he could cuddle up with it.
