Hi Everyone,
I'm in the process of buying everything I need to bring our first APH home. I Have a zoo zone 2 ( which as you probably know is enclosed apart from the cage top). I'm just wondering if anybody uses heat pads only? I've bought a heat pad that can go up to 40c and a thermostat that can switch it off at a certain temp, in this case 25c. Also with the thermostat where do I put the probe? Do I attach it to the heat pad? Thanks |

Heat pads aren't recommended for heating for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs need the air in their cage to be around 25* C and not just the bottom of the cage. They are also prone to low temperature heat burns from laying on heating pads. The safest way to heat your cage would be using a Ceramic Heat Emitter in a 10 inch dome that is rated for CHE's. This would have to be plugged into the thermostat to control the temp.

Your better off using the ceramic dome clamp lamp (desinged for reptiles) with a ceramic heat bulb and thermostat, you can either buy a stand (which will need to be leaned on a wall and put a bit under the cage) or just rest it on bars - the bars do not get hot I have done this. I also put tin foil over some the bars to keep the heat in better during the winter

Hi again,
Thanks for the info. Would the CHE have any effect on the plastic on the zoozone 2? Also, What is the average running cost of a 100watt bulb? I'm not trying to come across as cheap. I'm very serious about getting a hedgehog so cost isn't an issue. Just looking for a rough figure. Last edited by Benty666; 01-22-2019 at 03:47 AM. |

They dont get that hot so have no effect on the plastic of the zoozone just sit it in the middle on the bars at the top. Or get the stand and have it hang over the top.
They are are about £8.50 - £9 maybe £10 depending where you get them from. I've got pictures of the exact things you'll need to help you find it easier if you'd like ?? It also includes rough prices. Last edited by Ria; 01-22-2019 at 04:00 AM. |

Hi Ria, That would be a great help. Sorry I wasn't very clear. I meant running cost for electricity? Thanks |

Ohhh its doesnt change by much maybe like a couple more pounds but wont increase what you already pay by very much.
The dome needs to be a higher watt, the one you have the link for is only 25w you need 150w dome holder. You bulb is fine as its 100w I wouldnt use higher. I've added pictures of the bulb, the holder, the thermostat and the stand (incase you wanted the stand or wanted to see what I meant by stand) |

Hi Ria,
I've bought the bulb and dome you suggested. They should be arriving tomorrow. I'm picking up my food and bedding today. Hopefully by Saturday I should be able to go and view some Pygmy's. Thanks all for your advice |
