Default Heating pad question

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on this site, I have a question concerning my hedgie that is nearly two years old. So here is my concern, I use a heating pad in his cage. Our house is always heated around 78 degrees and never below 76 degrees, so I really feel that the heating pad is not necessary, not to mention the other concerns that come with it. So here's my problem, he loves it, he is always laying on it when he sleeps, he even lays behind his bed instead of in it so he can lay on it. I want to get rid of it all together but I'm not sure how he will do without it. So I guess my question is, will he be ok if I just take it away? Keep in mind he has had it for nearly a year and a half now. Thanks!

Is it in his cage or underneath the cage? In the cage isn't a good idea anyway. What do you keep it wrapped/covered in? You can try leaving that in the cage, without the heating pad actually being there, and giving him a few days to see how he reacts.

Do you have a thermometer in the cage? If you're only going by the temperature reading on a wall thermostat, his cage, depending on the location, can actually be a lower temperature by as much as 5-6 degrees or so. So if you don't have a thermometer in the cage, you should get one first. Check the temperature in the cage with and without the heating pad. It may be that the heating pad actually functions as a heat source that he needs, in which case, you should invest in a different heat source instead.

Yea, the thermometer is in the cage. The heating pad is under the cage, he lies on the spot above where it is at. It has a cover over it.

I do have a ceramic heat emitter though, just in case. I'm just afraid that it will get too hot if I use it along with our house always being as warm as it is.

If his thermometer is always reading 76-78, you should be fine to take the heating pad out. Keep an eye on it so you know how much the temp changes (if any) from having it out. He may protest for a few days, but he should get used to the change without a problem. If for some reason you see a change that doesn't go away in a few days, after he's given time to adapt, you can always put it back, but it's unlikely.
