Default Heating Pad

Hello! So it’s getting colder out. Just wondering what heating pads you all use for under the cage. I don’t trust heating lamps as I’ve heard too many horror stories of houses being burnt because of them.

Hi, I'm afraid heating pads are not recommended (in or under the cage). A hedgehog requires the air surrounding it to be warm (not the ground) so a heat pad is not sufficient to achieve this.

A ceramic heat emitter (CHE) is the most recommended way to heat the whole cage air. Provided you buy a lamp fixture which is suitable to be used with a CHE (the bulb holder on the fixture must be ceramic to withhold the heat of the CHE bulb), and you are using it plugged into a thermostat to control the CHE (to stop it overheating and being on too long etc, it will turn it on and off when required and you set it to the required temp) then they are safe to use. Also make sure the fixture is secure so it cannot fall and nothing can come into contact with it and it is not covered. Check the fixture box and manual to make sure it is CHE approved. Flukers and zoo med are recommended brands.
